Best Weekend Getaways From Boston in 2026

Boston has an unusually good weekend map: a 90-minute drive to Newport, a train that runs from North Station to Maine, a ferry that crosses to Provincetown in about 90 minutes, and mountain towns that need a car and most of a day. The decision is less about which place is best and more about which journey you are willing to make twice in three days.

Every travel time below is attributed to the source it came from. Where an official tourism board, ferry operator, or Amtrak page gave a figure, we used it. Where only third-party travel guides had one, the text says so, and where we could not find a figure we left it out instead of guessing. Check the operator for current schedules before you book.

How to choose between these trips

• No car and want an easy first trip: Portland, Maine by Amtrak Downeaster, or Provincetown by ferry.
• One short drive, no transfers: Newport, about 90 minutes per Discover Newport.
• Mountains, foliage, or skiing: North Conway and the White Mountains (about 2.5 to 3 hours) or Stowe (about 3.5 hours by third-party estimates), both by car.
• Arts, inns, and hiking in one region: the Berkshires, car strongly recommended.
• A big-city weekend instead of a small-town one: New York City by Amtrak from South Station or Back Bay.

What to book first

Book the ferry or train seat and the bed before anything else. Provincetown and island ferries sell out in season, and Berkshires, Stowe, and White Mountains inns fill on foliage weekends. Restaurants and tours can wait until you know where you are sleeping.

The ranked shortlist

The order weighs how easy the trip is to execute, how well the season fits, and how few things have to go right. A lower pick can be the better one if you have a car, a specific season, or a reason that fits it exactly.

1. Portland, Maine

Portland is the easiest car-free weekend from Boston. Amtrak says the Downeaster runs from Boston North Station to Brunswick in 3 hours 25 minutes, with Portland on the way, and Amtrak's Downeaster site describes five daily round trips between Brunswick and Boston. Other sources put Portland at about 2.5 hours from Boston; the Amtrak pages we could read did not list a Portland-only time, so treat that as approximate. Trains use North Station, not South Station, and Amtrak notes it offers no connecting transfers to other Boston stations.

Plan for the Old Port, East End, West End, or waterfront. Visit Maine describes summer as gardens, beaches, and windjammer sailing and fall as foliage and harvest-season food. The caveat is that Amtrak's Downeaster site mentions a new schedule effective October 19, 2026, so check times before you book a fall weekend.

The mistake to avoid is assuming the train covers every errand once you arrive. If you want islands or lighthouses outside the walkable core, price a short rental or tour. Verdict: Portland is the best first Maine weekend if you do not want to drive.

2. Newport, Rhode Island

Newport is the easiest drive. Discover Newport says it is about 70 miles from Boston and roughly 90 minutes by car, 100 miles from Hartford, and 175 miles from New York City. Without a car, Discover Newport lists Amtrak to Kingston (with a van, car, or RIPTA Bus 64 onward; the bus does not run Sundays or holidays) and Amtrak to Providence with a free seasonal shuttle to the Providence-to-Newport ferry, a seasonal trip of roughly one hour.

The practical base is downtown Newport on foot, or Bellevue Avenue or Middletown if you are hunting value. Discover Newport lists parking as a mix of public lots, private lots, pay-and-display lots, metered spaces, and a few free zones, and recommends exploring downtown on foot. The best months are May through October, but summer weekends are when parking and rates bite.

The mistake is booking a room far from downtown with no parking plan. Verdict: choose Newport when you want the shortest drive to a polished coastal weekend, and pick shoulder dates if you can.

3. Provincetown and Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Provincetown by water avoids the worst of the Cape. The Provincetown tourism board lists two operators: Bay State Cruise Company's fast ferry from 200 Seaport Blvd, and Boston Harbor Cruise Company's ferry from 1 Long Wharf, both arriving at MacMillan Wharf in about 90 minutes. For 2026, Bay State runs daily May 16 through October 18, with a late-fall schedule October 23 through November 15, and Boston Harbor Cruise runs daily May 16 through October 12. The tourism board notes the ferry lets you avoid Route 6 traffic; we did not find an official drive-time figure for Boston to the Cape.

If you want the Cape without a car, the CapeFLYER train runs from South Station to Hyannis on weekends from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day; the CapeFLYER site says children under 11 ride free and bikes and pets ride free, but did not give a trip time. The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce calls fall the Cape's second summer, with warm weather and relaxed seaside festivals after Labor Day.

The mistake is assuming the ferry is available in every month. Check operator dates before you plan a late-fall weekend. Verdict: Provincetown by ferry is the best beach-town weekend that does not require a car.

4. Berkshires, Massachusetts

The Berkshires reward a car trip. The regional tourism board does not give a Boston drive time; it lists Logan Airport at about 2.5 hours and 135 miles, says the region is about 1.5 hours end to end, and directs eastern Massachusetts drivers to I-90 West, exit 2 (Lee) for the northern and central Berkshires or exit 1 (West Stockbridge) for the south. It says a car is strongly recommended and notes limited Uber and Lyft.

Without a car, the tourism board mentions the Lake Shore Limited serving Pittsfield and buses, and says the Berkshire Flyer rail service runs from New York City to Pittsfield, not from Boston. Base yourself where your plan is: Lenox and Stockbridge for arts, Great Barrington for dining, North Adams for museums. We did not verify any event or performance dates for this guide.

The mistake is choosing a town without checking how you will reach the trails and venues. Verdict: choose the Berkshires if you have a car and want culture and quiet over a coastline.

5. North Conway and the White Mountains, New Hampshire

North Conway is the mountain trip with the most range within a Boston weekend. A local information site lists it at about 135 miles and roughly 2 hours 41 minutes from Boston, and other estimates run 2.5 to 3 hours without stops. These come from local and travel-guide sources, not an official board, and weekend traffic will add time. We could not read the New Hampshire tourism site, so treat the figures as approximate.

One travel guide notes the Kancamagus Highway is a 34-mile scenic road that adds about 45 minutes. That is attributed to a single guide, so budget for it on a foliage weekend rather than assuming the time. The White Mountains work best from June through October for hiking and in ski season for winter.

The mistake is squeezing a scenic detour into a short Sunday drive home. Verdict: choose North Conway when your priority is hiking and foliage within a manageable drive.

6. Stowe, Vermont

Stowe is the farthest of the car trips. Third-party sources, including a lodging site, put it about 198 to 200 miles and roughly 3.5 hours from Boston via I-93 north and I-89 north; we could not verify this with an official source. Rail service ends at Waterbury, about 20 minutes away, per those same third-party sources, so for most weekenders this is a driving trip.

Stowe Mountain Resort's site lists a Gondola SkyRide and a Toll Road for summer visitors, and winter is its signature season, but the site did not state opening dates, so check before you book. The best windows are January through March for skiing and late September through October for foliage.

The mistake is treating Stowe like Newport: a 3.5-hour drive for only two nights leaves little time on site. Verdict: choose Stowe for a three-night mountain weekend, not a rushed Saturday.

7. Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Portsmouth is the compact option. Amtrak's Downeaster page lists New Hampshire stops at Exeter, Durham, and Dover, and does not list Portsmouth, so a car or a connection is part of the plan. We could not read a source that gave an official drive time from Boston, so we are leaving it out.

It is a small historic coast town, strongest from May through October and on holiday weekends. It works as a one-night add-on to a Maine trip rather than a standalone headliner.

The mistake is expecting a nightlife or museum scene on the scale of Portland. Verdict: choose Portsmouth as a short overnight or a stop on the way to Maine.

8. Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, Massachusetts

The islands are a ferry decision first. The Steamship Authority markets a high-speed passenger ferry dock to dock in one hour, and says passengers without vehicles do not need a reservation, but its page did not give crossing times for the conventional car ferries on Woods Hole-Vineyard Haven/Oak Bluffs or Hyannis-Nantucket, so we are not stating them. It directs vehicle travelers to check space availability, and lists parking at the Thomas B. Landers Lot in Woods Hole and the Brooks Road Lot in Hyannis.

It also notes that, during terminal construction, Martha's Vineyard standby is replaced by the Blue Line for Preferred and Excursion customers, so vehicle travel needs more planning than a passenger trip. The strongest months are June through September.

The mistake is bringing a car for a beach-and-bike weekend. Verdict: choose an island only for a true beach weekend, and book the ferry before the hotel.

9. New York City, New York

New York is the train weekend. Amtrak's Northeast Regional page lists Boston South Station and Back Bay as stops. We could not read an official Boston-New York trip time; a NerdWallet comparison lists Acela at about 3 hours 45 minutes and the Northeast Regional at about 4 hours 15 minutes, so allow a half day each way and check Amtrak for the actual train.

It works year-round, and the car-free logistics are the main advantage. Hotel prices and event demand vary a lot, so check dates against big events before booking.

The mistake is cutting the schedule too tight: a Friday evening departure and a Sunday night return leaves little time in the city. Verdict: choose New York when you want a city weekend and do not want to drive.
