Best Weekend Getaways From Seattle in 2026

Seattle sits between mountains, ferries, and an international border, so the right weekend depends more on logistics than on distance. Leavenworth is a 2-hour-14-minute drive over Stevens Pass; Whidbey is a 20-minute ferry; Victoria and Vancouver need a passport; Mount Rainier depends on the season; Walla Walla is a four-hour drive.

Every travel time below is attributed to the source it came from. Where an official tourism board, ferry system, or park page gave a figure, we used it. Where only third-party guides had one, the text says so, and where we could not find a figure we left it out. Check operators for current schedules before you book.

How to choose between these trips

• A short drive to a mountain town: Leavenworth, about 2 hours 14 minutes via US-2.
• An island without a long trip: Whidbey Island via the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry, or the San Juan Islands via Anacortes with a reservation plan.
• High country in summer: Mount Rainier, July through September.
• A city break across the border: Vancouver by Amtrak Cascades or Victoria by passenger ferry, both with a passport.
• Wine or a coast weekend: Walla Walla (a 4-hour drive or short flight) or Cannon Beach by way of Portland.

What to book first

Book ferry reservations and rooms first. The San Juan route fills on summer weekends, Leavenworth fills on festival weekends, and Victoria passenger ferries run on a seasonal timetable. Dinner and tours can wait until the base is secure.

The ranked shortlist

The order weighs how few things have to go right: drive length, ferry or border friction, season, and how well the trip fits two nights. A lower pick can be better if you have the right season or a specific reason.

1. Leavenworth, Washington

Leavenworth is the cleanest mountain-town drive. The official Leavenworth guide gives 117 miles via US-2 over Stevens Pass, about 2 hours 14 minutes each way, with extra time on festival weekends, holidays, and in winter weather. The Leavenworth site lists Oktoberfest, Christmastown, and Winter Karneval among its signature festivals, but its pages did not give dates, so check the calendar.

The train is not a day-trip option. The same guide says the Amtrak Empire Builder runs once a day each way, leaving Seattle around 4:55 pm and arriving around 8:17 pm, and returning from Leavenworth around 7:23 am and reaching Seattle around 11:29 am, so it supports an overnight visit only. In winter it recommends leaving Leavenworth by about 5 to 6 pm and checking WSDOT pass conditions.

The mistake is driving Stevens Pass at night in winter or underestimating festival-weekend parking. Verdict: choose Leavenworth for the cleanest drive to a mountain-town weekend.

2. Whidbey Island, Washington

Whidbey is the fastest island trip. WSDOT schedules list the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry crossing at about 20 minutes (these are older schedule documents, so check the current timetable), and the Captain Whidbey Inn says the route runs from 5:30 am until after midnight, with two boats providing service every half hour for most of the day.

You can also drive: the inn gives the route via I-5 exit 226, SR 536 west, and SR 20, crossing the Deception Pass Bridge about 4 miles later. For the Port Townsend-Coupeville ferry, the inn says reservations are strongly recommended. Third-party sources estimate 1.5 to 2 hours to Deception Pass from Seattle, which we could not verify officially.

The mistake is arriving at the ferry on a summer weekend without checking the wait. Verdict: choose Whidbey for an island without a long trip.

3. San Juan Islands, Washington

The San Juans are a ferry-planning trip. WSDOT says the Anacortes/San Juan Islands route opens vehicle reservations in three phases, with the first phase two months before the season, and that 20 percent of deck space is held for emergency and standby vehicles. For a reserved sailing, join the line 45 to 60 minutes in advance and check in at least 30 minutes before. A reservation is not a ticket, and a no-show fee applies. We could not verify the crossing time from official pages.

Visit San Juans describes winter as quiet beaches and uncrowded shops and links separate Orcas, San Juan, and Lopez pages. We did not verify the 2027 reservation opening date, so check WSDOT. The best months are May through September.

The mistake is driving to Anacortes without a reservation and relying on standby. Verdict: choose the San Juans for a real island weekend, planned around the ferry.

4. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Rainier is a seasonal trip. NPS says the Sunrise road is usually open from about July 1 through early September, begins closing nightly in late September, and closes for winter by mid-October or earlier with the first heavy snow. The Paradise road is not open year-round and closes nightly from November 1 through winter, reopening each morning depending on snow removal.

On wildflowers, NPS says many flowers are usually blooming by mid-July, the meadows are very impressive by August 1, and frost can arrive by late August. NPS lists Longmire to Paradise as 12 miles and 25 minutes, and White River Entrance to Sunrise as 13 miles and 45 minutes. NPS did not give a Seattle drive time on the pages we read.

A May 2026 NPS release reported by search results said timed-entry reservations were not required in 2026; we did not confirm 2027, so check the park. The mistake is planning a Sunrise day after the road has closed. Verdict: choose Rainier from July through early September.

5. Victoria, British Columbia

Victoria is a ferry weekend. The Clipper passenger ferry from Seattle is described by third-party sources as roughly 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours, with up to two sailings a day in season and fewer in winter. The Clipper page we read did not list the schedule or documents, so verify both with Clipper and the Canadian government.

It is passenger-only, so plan to walk on and stay near the Inner Harbour. Third-party sources list a passport, passport card, enhanced driver license, or NEXUS card as accepted documents, which should be confirmed officially.

The mistake is booking a hotel before checking sailing days. Verdict: choose Victoria for a harbor weekend and book the ferry first.

6. Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver is an international city weekend. Amtrak lists the Cascades route as running between Vancouver BC Pacific Central Station and Seattle King Street Station. News reports put the trip at about four hours, and one 2025 report said a customs change would trim 10 minutes; confirm the current time on the Amtrak Cascades timetable.

The Amtrak page we read did not mention border procedures. Bring a passport and check entry rules with the Canadian and US governments. The best months are May through October and December.

The mistake is planning a tight Sunday return. Verdict: choose Vancouver for a city weekend with a passport-ready plan.

7. Portland, Oregon

Portland is the train city break. Amtrak Cascades serves Portland Union Station, and travel guides put the trip near 3.5 hours; a 2017 WSDOT announcement reported a target of 3 hours 20 minutes. A 2022 report said three daily round trips; verify the current timetable.

It is strongest April through October. The practical base is a central neighborhood near Union Station.

The mistake is treating it as a short hop. Verdict: choose Portland when you want a city weekend by train.

8. Walla Walla, Washington

Walla Walla is a long drive for a wine weekend. The Walla Walla tourism site lists the drive from Seattle at about 4 hours and the flight on Alaska Airlines at about 40 minutes, and says the surrounding hills are dotted with more than 130 wineries, with 40 tasting rooms downtown. A third-party guide notes cross-Cascades traffic can add time.

Annual events listed include Spring Release, Holiday Barrel Weekend, and the Balloon Stampede, and the site lists the Airport District Harvest Festival on October 17, 2026. We did not verify other dates. The best months are April through June and September through October.

The mistake is driving over the mountains for a single night. Verdict: choose Walla Walla for a three-night wine weekend, or fly.

9. Cannon Beach, Oregon

Cannon Beach is a coast trip with a long approach. The Cannon Beach site says it is just 90 minutes from Portland and describes Haystack Rock as an Oregon icon; we found no official Seattle drive time, so combine the Seattle-to-Portland leg with the 90-minute coastal leg and treat it as a three-night trip.

The site mentions the Stormy Weather Arts Festival (November 6-8) and Haystack Holidays (November-December) in the fall; it did not describe storm watching or tide pools, so we do not claim detail. The best months are May through October.

The mistake is underestimating the total travel time. Verdict: choose Cannon Beach for a long weekend, not a quick one.
